THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES
Inter Family Systems and Acceptance Commitment Therapy
I incorporate aspects of a variety of frameworks into my work with clients but my primary therapeutic approach is Internal Family Systems (IFS), which is based on the concept that all humans have a system of parts within themselves and are led by a core Self. Parts are shaped and sometimes wounded by different life experiences and through IFS, I strive to help you identify the parts in your system, connect with and learn more about them, and eventually find ways to heal them. This process can foster internal harmony as well as more easeful connections with other people. Learn more here.
In addition to IFS, I often integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which focuses on mindfulness, finding acceptance, value identification, and committing to actions that align with those values. Values-driven action is about identifying what truly matters to you and making intentional choices to live in line with those values, even in difficult times. This approach can be helpful in finding ways to live a meaningful, fulfilling life.
These therapeutic models offer flexible and powerful tools to address a variety of challenges and can lead to greater self-awareness, increased insight, and more peaceful connections in both your outer and inner worlds.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Free 20-minute consultation
I am happy to offer a free 20-minute phone call so that we have a chance to talk with each other about what it is you’re looking for in therapy and what I am able to offer. If it feels like we could be a good fit, we can continue onto scheduling our first session and I will send you intake paperwork through a secure portal.
First Session
In our first session, we’ll focus on getting to know each other more and discussing what brought you to therapy. We may talk about any aspect of your history that feels relevant as well as your goals for therapy. This can also be a chance to make sure the technology is working smoothly, and you’ll also have a chance to ask any questions about confidentiality and other policies that are outlined in the intake paperwork.
Ongoing Sessions
Our sessions will typically be 55 minutes long and conducted through a secure video platform. Each session is a collaborative process where we’ll check in on your goals and areas you’d like to focus on. I will bring ideas and structure to each session, but want to ensure that we are focusing on issues that feel relevant to you that day. I always welcome feedback about how things are going.
After the Session
After our session, I encourage you to take some time to reflect on the work we did and how you’re feeling. If we worked on any strategies or exercises, you’ll have time to practice them before our next session.
Before each Session
Before each session, it can be helpful to take a few moments to think about what you’d like to discuss during our time together. If nothing comes to mind, don’t worry! Sometimes having less of an agenda can lead to a very effective session and part of my job is to help you clarify what feels important to work on.
How it Works
I use Simple Practice, which is a secure one-stop shop for scheduling, billing, and paperwork, as well as the video platform we will use for our sessions. You will receive an appointment link prior to each session and you do not need to download anything to your computer. All you need is a reliable internet connection, webcam, and microphone.
